Strand Magazine Special Holiday Issue: Exclusive with John Grisham and short fiction by James Lee Burke, Laura Benedict, Mark Edwards, and David Marcum

In our 59th issue, we’re proud to present an exclusive interview with John Grisham, where he reflects on his path from lawyer to author, work with the Innocence Project, and his views on mass incarceration in the United States, not to mention some advice about writing itself.

James Lee Burke brings his inimitable style to bear on “Deportees”—a timely piece of short fiction featuring recurring character Sheriff Hackberry Holland—which we are proud to present in this issue.

The talented Laura Benedict brings us “Carnival,” a sinister, psychological tale that’ll make you think twice about the dangers of sleep deprivation. Mark Edwards pays homage to W.W. Jacobs’ “The Monkey’s Paw” with “Wish You Dead,” in which a jealous boyfriend goes to unspeakable lengths to get back the woman he loves. And David Marcum has Holmes and Watson investigating the mysterious machinations of twin brothers in “The Case of the Curious Cardboard Boxes.” As always, our stories are highlighted by the wonderful illustrations by the enormously talented Jeffrey B. McKeever.

  1. Martha Chetty

Where do I begin, I think the issue with the Grisham issue was incredible. I loved the timely story by James Lee Burke, which if you’re watching the news you’ll realize is a jab at the Trump regime. Reviews were informative as well.

  2. Mark Hrbek

I love John Grisham and James Lee Burke which is why I bought this magazine and I discovered Mark Edwards and Laura Benedict can spin a yarn too. I highly recommend this mag.

  3. Debbie Heinz

Enjoyable from first to last page. The JLB story was super, very dark, leaves you asking many question. I don’t like the works of John Grisham, but the interview with him was interesting, he seems like an outspoken guy. The Sherlock Holmes story by David Marcum was a gem.

  4. Lauren Gilbert

Cute magazine, slick, polished, good fiction. That old style short story art form is vanishing, good see a good fiction magazine around.

  5. Kirk Johnson

A coffee table type of magazine. Many ads, about 4 stories. I read it for the undiscovered literary works. The interviews seem generic, how many times can you ask the writer the same writing technique questions, yada yada yada.

  6. Sam Mehta

The holiday issue is billed as a holiday issue, but one of the stories takes place during Christmas. All the same I enjoyed it.

  7. Ben Finkle

Attractive packaging, I just picked it up for the art work, but I found it was much more than cool cover and shell inside. James Lee Burke’s story was gripping and was literary with a tinge of mystery, the John Grisham interview was a departure from some of the authors who just self promoting, and finally Laura Benedict’s story was chilling and reminded me of Carnival of Souls.

  8. Julie Kowal

Finally a magazine that I’ve been looking for. Lost works by Fitzgerald, Hemingway, and Steinbeck in the past 4 years. That had me subscribe. I also love the short stories, they read like an Alfred Hitchcock presents. The interviews are in-depth and don’t feel generic. The reviews tell you what to read and what to stay away from. Sometimes they will writing advice from authors like Lisa Gardner or Jo Nesbo too. I love this magazine!

  9. Doug Stansfield

I read an article in the New York Times about a lost Raymond Chandler story and I bought a sub. I really like this magazine. I wish it was a monthly instead of a quarterly, but I savor it. If it’s cold outside, I have a drink, make a fire, and read it. If anyone out there is listening, please become a monthly magazine!
