“You can imagine my astonishment when I opened my presents on Christmas day to find your latest issue of The Stand Magazine. The reason is that during the past several months I have been reading some rare 1897 to 1903 issues of The Strand Magazine purchased several years ago in a used book shop. As you mentioned in your history article on this web site, these old issues contain some of the stories by the very best Victorian fiction writers as well as regular features like “”Curosities””, “”The Pick of Punch”” and so on! While these old issues are bound in book form, the covers are very fragile and I’m almost afraid to read the stories in case the books falls apart. I’m really pleased with your Christmas 2002 issue and will order all the back issues, as well as all future issues. Thank you for bringing back such a wonderful magazine and giving the public a chance to read good literature. And, I really like the book review section because I can then make a learned selection when next at the mystery section of the book store. One last comment, I really enjoyed Mike Ashley’s very scholarly article on ghost stories of the past. As an avid reader of Victorian and Edwardian literature, I’ve read many of the stories mentioned in his article and it was nice to read such a well researched article.”

I was browsing mags at Borders and picked up Strand. I love it! I will subscribe to it. Great website too. I have a new dimension in my life. Your book reviews will be helpful as well. Wish you published more often.

Thank you,

  1. I discovered this website after a splendid return of BBC’s Sherlock. Greatfully so, as my only attempt to write such mystery crime fiction has proven to be more misguided-ambition than my competences can cover right now.

Thanks for the short stories offered as free downloads. A nice gesture, and source of inspiration!

  2. Yes, the website is superb. But the magazine far surpasses it in quality and that is tough to do. I love receiving my copy in the mail because it insures that I have excellent reading in store in the articles, short stories, and reviews. Kudos for producing such excellence.
