Sherlock Holmes is perhaps the most famous detective in history. He was creative by Scottish writer, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and is widely considered to be the prototype of the modern detective. In 1887, Holmes made his debut in Conan Doyle’s novel, A Study in Scarlet. The first collection of Holmes stories was published in 1892 with The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Although influenced by Edgar Allan Poe’s C. Auguste Dupin and Émile Gaboriau’s Monsieur Lecoq, Conan Doyle’s detective has made a far bigger impact in the mystery genre than any that had come before.
