The Best American Mystery and Suspense 2023 edited by Lisa Unger

A collection of the year’s best mystery and suspense short fiction selected by New York Times bestselling author Lisa Unger and series editor Steph Cha.

“This form has a special kind of magic, the ability to transport you quickly, intensely, to capture character, time, place, and story with immediacy,” writes guest editor Lisa Unger in her introduction. The transporting stories in this year’s The Best American Mystery and Suspense are populated by those who exist on the fringe of our society and want more than what life has dealt them: A haunted veteran turned career criminal is on the run. An injured fighter turned bouncer seeks vengeance for his lost love. An assassin on his last job finds himself questioning his life choices and breaks all the rules to understand his final victim. By turns thrilling and enlightening, each story, according to Unger, “will have you holding your breath, flipping the pages, will leave you thinking about people and why they do the dark, dangerous, frightening things that they do.”

The Best American Mystery and Suspense 2023 includes Ashley-Ruth M. Bernier • William Boyle • S. A. Cosby • Jacqueline Freimor • James A. Hearn • Ladee Hubbard • A. J. Jacono • Adam Meyer • Silvia Moreno-Garcia • Walter Mosley • Leigh Newman • Joyce Carol Oates • Margaret Randall • Annie Reed • Anthony Neil Smith • Faye Snowden • Jervey Tervalon • Joseph S. I got the issue with Steinbeck’s treaty on Democracy, pretty and good and not what you expect to find in a mystery magazine.

  2. Wendell Scott

The game is afoot with the reprise of this magazine, it is pretty heavy and printed on good stock and a fun magazine to have on your coffee table. My one thing is that the covers all look the same and the reviewers can be negative at times.

  3. Ilya Kazdan

I love when they focus on fiction and can care less about what an author’s daily routine is. I really enjoy the ads for finding books that are off the beaten path and reviews that I can trust.

  4. debbie Axelrod

Love this magazine. Great fiction, book reviews you can trust and some awesome interviews.

  5. Barb Kristic

I read this lost James M Cain story, a real dark in more ways than one lost story by a giant in noir. They also interviewed the actor Paul Giamatti, that guy is a crime fiction fanatic. I also enjoyed the works they publish by John Floyd, he is like the Hitchcock of the fiction short story.

  6. Dana Slattery

A swell looking magazine, I wish it was monthly, those lost works are a lot of fun and as a budding author they interviews are incredible. I picked up a back issue with a Lee Child interview and that guy gave advice that was better than Hemingway on the writing process. I also loved that they published the gone but not forgotten authors like Elmore Leonard and MC Beaton.

  7. Michelle Norris

A coffee table magazine with covers of oil paintings, I like the lost works but some of them were like shooting blanks (pun intended) like the James M Cain story that was maudlin. I think they need stick to writers who are alive!
